45. The common attribution for this insight is to Martin Kähler, The So-called Historical Jesus.

46. The issue is complicated by the fact that the German language (in which “the Quest for the historical Jesus” was first discussed—almost a century before anywhere else) has two different adjectives pertaining to history (historisch and geschichtlich) that have no exact English equivalent. They are approximated by the two words “historical” and “historic,” the first referring to the bare events or facts of history, the latter to their significance for subsequent history. The distinction is captured in the proper nouns “Jesus” and “Christ,” the latter conveying the significance of the former, as in the declaration: “Jesus is the Christ” (John 20:31).
